FELICE VARINI  La Torre de Los Vientos  MEXICO CITY 1999

production | funding

Felice Varini uses architecture as a canvas for his pictorial creations. The whole of his opus is based upon bidimensional sketches projected over spaces in which a figure is legible only when observed from a specific point.

Making an exception in this modus operandi that distinguishes him, Varini appropriated the inner surface of the Torre de los Vientos without resorting to perspective as a working tool. Instead, he detected that the marks the framework made at the time of construction created a pattern of square bulges. Using a deep red, he painted every corner of the tower, with the exception of those bulges, thus revealing an involuntary composition that otherwise would have remained invisible. This operation transformed at the same time the space into a chromatic camera inside of which it could be seen how the light itself was dyed by the pigment on the walls.
